Zakat is the most quantitative obligation in Islam, and Turkey is one of the few countries where the math has an official answer: the fatwa corpus of the Din Isleri Yuksek Kurulu (DIYK), Turkey's highest religious ruling body, implemented in the Turkiye Diyanet Vakfi calculator at zekathesapla.tdv.org and adopted verbatim by IHH's calculator. This guide walks the method by hand, because a Muslim who understands the calculation owns it in a way no web form provides, and because the edge cases in your finances are exactly where the calculators need you to know what you are entering. Our zakat hub and calculator do the arithmetic when you are ready.

Step 1: Establish the nisab
The nisab is the wealth threshold below which no zakat is due. The DIYK standard is 80.18 grams of gold; IHH's tool also checks the silver equivalent of 612.36 grams. One recipient-favoring detail the TDV methodology documents and almost everyone else misses: nisab is determined using gold buying prices, while the payable amount is valued at selling prices. Check the current gram price on the day you calculate, multiply by 80.18, and that lira figure is your threshold. Our nisab explainer covers the gold-versus-silver question and why the threshold exists at all.
Step 2: Add up zakatable assets
The DIYK categories, as implemented in the official calculator:
- Gold and silver, by karat: all jewelry and bullion, valued at current prices (the calculator handles karat conversion). See our (gold article) for the karat math.
- Cash: TL and foreign currency, in hand and in accounts, including participation account balances. Details in our (cash article).
- Trade goods: inventory and stock held for sale, at current market value; business mechanics at our (business assets page).
- Receivables: money owed to you that you realistically expect to recover.
- Crops: agricultural produce under the separate osur rules, where the rate depends on irrigation method.
- Livestock: with the classical thresholds and in-kind rules, supported by the official calculator.
The gold details live in zakat on gold, cash in zakat on cash and participation accounts, business assets at the business assets guide, and investment holdings (stocks, funds, BES) in zakat on investments.
Step 3: Subtract what does not count
Two subtractions keep the base honest. Asli ihtiyac (essential needs) are outside zakat entirely: your home, car, furniture, tools of trade, and the like are not zakatable assets, no matter their value. Debts net off: what you owe reduces your zakatable base, per the DIYK debt-netting rules the calculators implement. The result is your net zakatable wealth. Two cautions here: do not net debts you are not actually servicing as a device to duck the obligation, and do not exclude 'savings for a purpose' (a car fund, a wedding fund); earmarked money is still money, and it is zakatable.
Step 4: Check the hawl and apply 2.5%
Zakat falls due when net zakatable wealth has remained at or above nisab for a full lunar year (hawl). The practical Turkish habit is to fix a date, commonly in Ramadan, and calculate annually on it; the TDV app's zakat calendar exists for exactly this. If your net figure clears the nisab, the rate on the monetary categories is 2.5 percent. A lunar-calendar note for salaried savers: the lunar year is about eleven days shorter than the solar one, so a fixed Gregorian date slightly overpays across decades, which harms nobody; the recipient-favoring drift is the right direction to err.
A worked example
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Gold jewelry (converted via karat to pure-gold grams, valued at sell price) | Value A |
| Cash and participation accounts (TL + FX at current rates) | Value B |
| Receivable from a brother-in-law, recovery expected | Value C |
| Subtotal | A + B + C |
| Minus outstanding debts | - D |
| Net zakatable wealth | A + B + C - D |
| Compare against nisab (80.18 g x current gold buy price) | Above? Zakat is due |
| Zakat payable | 2.5% of net |
That is the whole method for a typical salaried household. Farmers add the osur crop rules; business owners add trade goods; investors add holdings, each covered in the linked guides. The official calculator reproduces this flow, checks the nisab live, and produces a record of the calculation.
Mistakes we see every year
- Testing nisab against gold only: the threshold is priced in gold but tested against everything zakatable. Cash-rich, gold-poor households owe too.
- Using last year's gold price: in Turkish inflation, a twelve-month-old price can misstate the nisab line badly. Use the price on your calculation date.
- Skipping the receivables line: the money your cousin owes you is still your wealth if you expect it back.
- Treating the calculator as the ruling: the tools implement the DIYK method faithfully, but they compute what you enter. An incomplete inventory produces a confident wrong answer.
- Forgetting the record: the TDV app produces a PDF report of the calculation. Keep it; next year's calculation starts from this year's inventory.
Step 5: Pay it well
Zakat goes to the eligible categories, and Turkey's two institutional channels both apply the DIYK math: TDV, whose collected zakat is banked exclusively with participation banks before distribution in Turkey and 100-plus countries, and IHH, which lets donors direct zakat toward programs (orphans, emergency relief, education) across 123 countries. Direct giving to eligible relatives and neighbors remains not just valid but favored where need is close to home; the institutional channels solve verification and reach, not virtue. Our TDV versus IHH comparison weighs the two, and the zakat FAQ handles recipient questions.

Bottom line
The Turkish zakat stack is unusually trustworthy: an official methodology from the country's highest religious authority, implemented in free calculators, connected to payment rails that never touch interest-bearing accounts on the TDV side. What the stack cannot do is know your finances; that part, the honest inventory and the edge-case questions, is yours. Work the five steps once by hand, fix your annual date, and the obligation becomes a fifteen-minute ritual. For everything the steps did not cover, Alo 190 answers zakat questions the same way it answers inheritance ones, free.
