Dunya Katilim Review 2026: What Happens When a Gold Refiner Builds a Bank

Dunya Katilim has the strangest origin story in Turkish banking. The legal entity was founded on 30 October 1984 as Adabank, the Uzan Group's bank, seized by the TMSF in the 2003 to 2004 crisis, then parked under state administration for two decades through failed sale attempts in 2006, 2008 and 2011. On 23 August 2023 the gold refining group Ahlatci Holding bought it for 215 million lira, the BDDK approved conversion to a participation bank that November, and it has operated as Dunya Katilim since 26 December 2023. It now markets itself, accurately, as Turkey's only privately owned, domestically capitalized participation bank with branches.

We report the history because honesty requires it, and then we set it in proportion: today's owners, capital, license and management share nothing with the Uzan era except a corporate registration number. What the Ahlatci ownership does carry into the present is gold. A refining group built this bank's product shelf, and it shows in the best precious-metals platform in Turkish banking.

The gold ecosystem: closing the whole loop

The Altin Katilma Hesabi opens from 20 grams of 24-carat gold at a printed 50/50 profit split, with tenors of 1, 3, 6 and 12 months, partial withdrawal above the minimum, and top-ups at opening or renewal. Only Emlak Katilim matches the 50 percent split, from 10 grams; nobody matches what surrounds the account. ATOM collection machines take physical gold in, ATS jewelry intake values and converts ziynet gold at branches, FERAH holds digital gold with a physical delivery option, and the Altin Kesem feature accrues gold from card spending, shipping actual metal once you reach a gram. Insured door delivery and refinery-backed pricing close the loop. The bank also trades silver, platinum and palladium. If your household wealth lives in grams, as millions of Turkish households' wealth does, this is the one bank built around that fact. We compare it directly with Emlak in our gold head-to-head.

Gunes: the cleanest daily money in the sector

The Gunes Katilma Hesabi solves the idle-lira problem: 1 to 30 day broken tenors, lira only, 5,000 lira minimum, a printed 85/15 split and a 17:40 same-day cutoff. For money that must stay liquid, an emergency fund, a business float, next month's rent, this is the sector's most straightforward printed offer. Emlak's 1-day tenors start at a 75 percent share on the bottom tier; TOM Bank's Mega Gunluk shows rates in-app only. Gunes' printed 85 percent from a modest minimum wins the disclosure comparison outright. See how the short-tenor options stack up in our daily accounts roundup.

The rest of the shelf, honestly

The standard katilma hesabi is where the transparency story breaks down: ratios live in the calculator, with no published standing grid, which is exactly the practice we criticize at Albaraka and Turkiye Finans. Financing exists across the standard lines, new and used vehicles, land, new and second-hand homes, consumer needs, with an upfront arrangement fee disclosed and one genuinely good disclosure habit: the BSMV tax asymmetry is printed on the home financing page, zero percent for first-home buyers, 15 percent for existing owners. But rates are calculator-quoted, used-car age limits are unprinted, and with a thin branch network, big-ticket property transactions will often be easier at a larger bank. There is also an Enerya gas-conversion financing campaign, a niche but practical product for households converting heating systems.

Who should bank here

  • Households whose savings live in gold: the 20-gram entry, printed 50/50 split and the intake-to-delivery infrastructure make this the purpose-built choice.
  • Anyone holding jewelry gold idle in a drawer: ATS intake and ATOM machines convert it to yield-bearing grams without a dealer spread negotiation.
  • Savers with lumpy short-term cash: Gunes' printed 85/15 on 1 to 30 day money is the cleanest daily offer in the sector.
  • Savers who value ownership diversification: the only private, domestic alternative to state and Gulf parent banks.
  • Not yet for: buyers needing branch-heavy property service, savers wanting printed standard deposit grids, and anyone for whom institutional track record is the deciding factor.

Shariah governance

Following the April 2026 general assembly, the Advisory Committee is Prof. Dr. Murteza Bedir, Prof. Dr. Suleyman Kaya and Prof. Dr. Mehmet Islamoglu, the latter appointed to a three-year term from 9 March 2026, replacing Dr. Batuhan Bugra Akartepe. Bedir also chairs Vakif Katilim's committee, which puts one of the sector's most senior scholars at its head. The bank publishes an annual compliance assessment in its integrated report. The governance framework is standard BDDK-plus-TKBB; the participation track record, necessarily, is only as old as December 2023.

Verdict

Dunya Katilim earns an A for bank accounts in our Halal Money Index on the strength of what it prints: the 85/15 daily split, the 50/50 gold split, and the physical rails behind them. The recommendation follows the strengths precisely. Gold-first savers should treat it as their primary platform; everyone should consider Gunes for float; and for standard deposits and financing, treat it as a young challenger, demand written terms, and compare against the printed grids elsewhere. Start on our bank accounts page, or see the gold account rankings if grams are the point.
